Tapit is not waiting for NFC to take off for payments. Considering iPhones don't have built-in NFC chips, that may be a long while. So Tapit thinks there is a big market for physical ads that have built-in NFC chips and that there are already enough NFC-enable mobile phones that can read these. Not a bad idea to consider how Tapit can fit into your product.
